Virgin Series Complete!

I just finished up my "Revelation of the Virgin to the Artist" series! I am very happy with the paintings and the way that the project has grown. Each painting is titled as a different apparition of the virgin Mary. The series is intended to explore abstractions of traditional iconic paintings of these apparitions. Initially, i wanted the series to focus on Our Lady of Guadalupe and the images commonly associated with her. As the project matured I felt that instead of focusing on a single subject/context I should explore the phenomenon of her appearance to people around the world. More on this later. For now, here are the final pieces.

I will continue to update the blog from time to time to show progress on new paintings. Finished paintings will be published on the website. So please check out both.

For now, the website doesn't have much content but I am working on this daily.

New Progress in Revelation Series

Here is the new progress in my series Revelation of the Virgin to the Artist. It is now up to five pieces in progress with all near completion. It's been an interesting change to work a subjectively cohesive series like this. The concept has spurred new ideas for upcoming projects. For now I will be focusing on getting these pieces wrapped up and ready to show.

Pics of framed pieces in CMC show

Here the pictures of my pieces in the CMC show back in July. Took a break and have been working slowly on the revelation series. More on that later.

Preparation for Art Walk (CMC July 31, 2009)

Spent Sunday with my dad as he helped me frame pieces for my upcoming show at the CMC in Gaineville for Art Walk. Can't wait to show these pieces. Some have been complete and waiting to show for months. A few are brand new. After the show I will post up pictures of each piece that was shown. For now here are some pics of the framing process.

Revelation of the Virgin to the Artist Series

Ok. So I haven't painted in roughly four months. Upon gearing up for the upcoming Tiffany Sage and Family art show I began this series. It didn't start as a series. I was throwing some paint around one day and saw the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in one of the pieces. I decided to run with it as an exploration of iconic imagery and the many meanings and significances that it has had to people and cultures throughout history. After doing some reading on the subject I am fascinated by the way many indigenous cultures adopted iconic images of the catholic saints as representations of their own gods and goddesses. This subversive form of worship is the background and inspiration of this series.

Here are three of four (maybe five?) pieces that will be included in the series. These pieces are all still in progress.

Sea and Sky Again

Here is more progress on one of my Sea and Sky paintings.

New Work

Here are some new pieces I am working on. Included in this group is a self portrait. This will be my first one. So far I am liking it. It has kind of a "the artist surveying his artistic universe" feel. I want to continue in this direction. The other two are intended to be parallel pieces: sharing colors and compositional direction. The approach is the primary differing factor. They may part ways further down the road, but for now this is the idea.

Continuing Progress

Hereis a painting that has been going through some changes since its last post. I am working my way back to my favorite, open process. The results are making me happy. I have been missing that process.

Progress - Land and Sea Paintings

Latest progress on my two new land and sea paintings. I am pleased with how both are coming along. I am enjoying challenging my technical skills in new ways. At first I was worried about making sure these looked like paintings I would have done. Once I let go of the idea that they had to look a certain way, they began to look just how I wanted them to. More progress to come on these.

New pieces in progress

Here are a couple of pieces I have begun work on.

Old paintings 2

The photo at top is me posing in front of a mural I painted at my good friend Sharon's new home. It is 8' by 10' and is my biggest piece to date. I had a blast painting it and was honored that Sharon would allow me to be a permanent figure in her home.

Here are some paintings collected from the last two or three years. These pieces can be seen displayed at Spin Cycle and Cafe C in Gainesville, FL.
